Solar Battery Storage Installation in Elk Grove Village and Northwest Chicago
Store your excess solar energy and enjoy reliable backup power with a custom battery storage system from JT Solar Energy.

Why Add Battery Storage to Your Solar System?
A solar battery storage lets homeowners in Elk Grove Village and North Chicago store and save solar energy they produce during the day, and use it once the sun goes down. A battery storage system we at JT Solar Energy install, is the perfect way to store the excess energy your solar system generates and allow your home to function properly even if there’s an emergency.
The size of the storage system largely depends on your goals - do you want to have an emergency system that’s ready to spring into action when you need it, do you want to reduce your reliance on the grid, or reduce your utility bill further. What is a Solar Battery Storage System?
A solar battery storage installation is a system designed to store energy produced by your residential or commercial solar system. Without it, the excess energy produced gets sent to your local grid or goes unused.

Though the capacity of the battery system depends on your energy bills and household requirements, for most grid-tied households the industry standard is 10kWh to 13.5kWh. This capacity will give you up to 10 hours of whole house comfort (powering all house appliances without strict conservation); up to 15 hours of evening and nighttime usage, or 24+ hours of essential appliance use.

Of course, many of our clients across Illinois use battery systems not to go fully off the grid, but to:
Reduce their dependence on the grid
Save money on energy bills
Reduce your carbon footprint and
Protect your household from future utility cost increases
How does it work?
Solar battery storage system is basically a rechargeable energy hub, operating in three-step cycles:

-
Charge
-
Store and
-
Discharge

Charging stage
throughout the day, especially during the peak sunlight hours, your solar system will produce more electricity than your household consumes. This excess power can be sent to the utility grid, otherwise it goes to waste. If you install batteries, you can use this excess power to charge them.
Storage
once the batteries are fully charged, they are in stand-by, ready to send the energy back to your “home grid” when you need it. In theory, a typical lithium-ion battery will hold its charge for 3 to 6 month, but this is an isolated battery, outside of the system. An integrated battery storage system will lose its charge faster, typically in a few days to a few weeks.
Discharge stage
the discharge stage happens automatically when the battery system detects the loss of energy (when the sun goes down or the electric grid fails), and sends the energy back to your home’s electrical panel.

Why do People Install Solar Backup Batteries in Northwest Chicago?
Wherever you live in the US, battery storage gives you greater control over your solar energy and dependable backup power option.

In Illinois, and specifically in Chicago, summer is the wettest time of the year, with severe thunderstorms and even tornados. This aligns with a broader regional trend we’re seeing, where the central US has seen a fivefold increase in damaging, straight-line thunderstorm winds. This makes installing a solar battery storage system a necessity, as severe weather brings a higher risk of power outages due to fallen trees.

Another good reason to install a residential storage system is ComEd’s battery storage rebate of $300 per kWh of storage capacity. This is a one-time, upfront rebate that can cover a massive chunk of the equipment cost right off the gate. It will, of course, depend on the total system’s capacity, so it’s best to give us a call to go over the details.

Things to Consider Before Installing A Battery Storage System In Illinois
The first question you need to ask yourself is “How much energy do you really need to store?” because bigger is not always better. A battery storage system will depend on how much electricity your household uses, your solar system’s energy production, your available space, and your goals - do you want to maximize self-consumption or need a system for occasional power outages. Are you looking to:
Cut cost
though solar battery storage option may be more expensive initially, it will save money in the long run due to lower demand from the utility grid and better peak demand management.
Be more eco friendly
in the past, going green was more about the piece of mind than money. But things are rapidly changing; especially in Illinois where environmental policies are making sustainability financially rewarding, providing real incentives and rebates that drive the cost of your entire solar operation down.
Become more independent
latest advancements in battery technology continue to improve their performance and effectiveness. These performance improvements allow the system to work more efficiently and reduce your dependence on the power grid.
How Hard is it to Add Battery Storage to Your Current Solar System?
Whether or not adding a battery to an existing solar system is simple or complicated depends on a number of factors our team investigates during the initial site assessment. Some of which are:

-
Existing inverter and system architecture
-
Electrical panels
-
Available capacity
-
Wiring
-
Age of the solar installation

The process also considers any additional equipment or changes to the solar panels necessary to integrate the battery safely as adding a battery often involves electrical work, equipment upgrades, permitting, and inspections.
