Is Installing Residential Solar Panels in Northwest Chicago a Good Idea?
When we’re talking about the potential for solar energy, our mind quickly goes further west, to Arizona, Texas or California; Illinois is, arguably, not the undisputed leader in this department.
But… though these western states get a higher potential for raw solar output, it’s important to note that the average temperature here is higher than in Illinois, with rooftop temperatures often hitting 149°F to 167°F. At these extreme temperatures, the effectiveness of photovoltaic panels goes down by 10% to as much as 25%.

As surprising as it may sound, we can think of Northwest Chicago as a sort of an ideal area for residential solar production with a number of benefits:
Minimal heat degradation and increased efficiency
unlike overly hot areas with temperatures regularly climbing past 90°F, in Elk Grove Village and Northwest Chicago, solar panels will operate at close to 0% thermal penalty (there will be less resistance to electrical conduction). Furthermore, with average temperatures of 50 to 60°F, the system’s internal temperature stays as close as it gets to the ideal Standard Test Conditions (77°F).
Cost futureproofing
since 2021, utility electricity prices in Illinois have surged over 20%, which made the electricity rates notably higher than the national average. By investing in a residential solar system, you’ll effectively offset and futureproof these added costs.
Property tax and added home value
Illinois is one of the 32 states currently offering some sort of property tax exemption. Illinois goes a step further actually, providing 100% tax exemption without a sunset date. This means you can get all the added property value of installing a residential solar system, without having to pay extra tax to it.
“Selfcleansing”
Chicago area gets regular rainfall through the year, keeping the panels clean of dust and debris without expensive cleaning services. Also, midwestern spring and summer months bring crisp, dry, clean air, devoid of dust and debris, meaning the sunlight cuts through the atmosphere with minimal scattering, before landing straight to your solar panels.

How Does a Residential Solar System Work?
With JT Solar Energy you don’t need to know anything about how a solar system works, what an inverter is, or how the energy is stored; the only thing you need to know is that from the moment we step onto your roof, we take care of everything.
But, just in case you do, a common residential solar system we install consists of three main components:
Solar panels
that go to your roof and are responsible for harnessing the power of the sun
An inverter
responsible for turning direct current (DC) into alternating (AC), making it readily available to your household appliances and
Energy storage
in the form of batteries which store surplus electricity you produce, so you can use it during the night, or on especially cloudy days when the solar output is not as high
Mounting system
secures the solar panels to your roof and positions them at the proper angle for optimal sunlight exposure.
JT Solar Energy Residential Installation Process
The initial consultation is, of course, free, you can pick up the phone and give us a call. While on the phone, we’ll talk about your requirements and the system that meets your criteria. This is also where we schedule a site visit.

Initial visit and consultation
most of the time, our technicians go to you, for the initial inspection and survey of the site - we need to assess the condition of the roof, direction and roof slope, sun exposure, shading, necessary panel size/capacity, roof access, your energy consumption etc.
Customized plan and permits
our residential solar plan is designed with a three-line electrical diagram, fully compliant with the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC). Also, our roof structural plan and equipment layout features code-compliant fire clearance pathing, signed and sealed by an Illinois-licensed professional engineer. We also track the review process internally to ensure everything is in order.
Solar system installation
once we agree on the design and complete it, comes the best part, the system installation. While performing the installation, our crew coordinates the permits and inspections necessary, so that we can test every circuit and schedule the city and the utility inspection. In the state of Illinois, a residential solar system must first pass the final building and electrical inspections (scheduled 24 hours in advance), which is followed by the utility company closeout.
Sit back and enjoy
once your system passes all inspection and kicks into gear, all you need to do is check out the app from time to time and see the output of your solar system and the electricity bills drop in realtime

Does Solar Battery Storage Make Sense in Illinois?
Up until very recently, net metering made a lot of sense in Illinois as, since its introduction (in 2007) the program offered what’s called “a full retail rate”, or “1-for-1” net metering. What this meant was that every kilowatt-hour (kWh) you sent to the grid, you earned credit to the full retail price of electricity.
What 2025 changes introduced was “supply-only net metering,” which meant that when you send electricity back to the grid, you only got credit for the supply portion of the bill - the actual electricity, which makes up 50-65% of the total bill. Your net metering no longer covered the delivery charges, taxes or fees.
This brought about the question of the battery storage necessity. Of course, installing a storage system is not a requirement, but with the current net metering changes, it’s starting to make more and more sense for the Northwest Chicago residents. JT Solar Energy also provides solar battery storage installation service, which you can read more about here.

FAQs
In terms of the nationwide average, Chicago gets a respectable amount of sun throughout the year, with about 4.2 peak sun hours per day on average. What’s interesting is according to its solar radiation potential, Illinois is ranked somewhere in the middle, but when it comes to total installed solar capacity, it ranks 6th, which suggests that residential solar panels are a viable option for homeowners in this area.
Your return on investment (ROI) will usually depend on multiple factors, including the total cost of the system, how much energy you produce, what the local utility rates are, what incentives are available, and your home’s total energy consumption.
